Summer book buses may make rounds

Live Oak — Suwannee County students may get an added bonus of a book bus this summer to encourage reading over the summer.

The Suwannee Reads! program was introduced to the Suwannee County School Board at a workshop on Tuesday, April 10 by Dawn Lamb, director of curriculum, instruction and assessment.

With the potential of having a book bus that could go out to rural areas in the county, especially to those students that would not otherwise be able to come into town, it would make it more accessible for students to continue on the Accelerated Reader program throughout the summer.

“I know in Branford we were down there one evening, and they were having a book sale. That place was getting mobbed with kids wanting books. They were just hungry for the stuff. You would have thought there was free food or something, they were just eating up the books,” board member Ed daSilva said.

Lamb said they had discussed the idea of making the AR tests mobile as well in addition  to having testing sites open.

Board chair Julie Ulmer also agreed that mobile AR tests would be very important.

“If there was a way to do mobile testing as well as books, that would be very good,” Ulmer said.

Board member Jerry Taylor expressed both favor and concern for the program. He felt it would be a great opportunity for the students but was concerned about the expense of cooling buildings during the summer for testing sites.

There were other options discussed as well for testing sites or book stops, such as using the 21st Century sites that would already be open as testing sites or the sites that offer lunch to students throughout the summer. Or perhaps taking meals and books to the outlying region “that can’t get to town” Lamb said.

“We want to try to pair those things together. That’s our vision, our dream, for the summer,” Lamb said.

Taylor asked Lamb for a budget for the program be presented at the April 24 board meeting.

“We’ll have it all figured out how we are going to pay for it,” Lamb said.
