Gingrich takes Suwannee County

Romney falls in second

Live Oak — Republican voters in Suwannee County chose former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich as the candidate they feel better suited to take on President Barack Obama in November.

Gingrich won the votes here by 46 percent, or 1,680 votes. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney took 25 percent, or 909 votes.

Rick Santorum came in third place with 19 percent, or 702 votes.

Ron Paul garnered 304 votes.

Of the 8,524 registered republican voters in Suwannee County, 3,662 of them voted for a participation rate of 43 percent.

The candidates will now shift their focus to Nevada for precinct caucuses to be held Saturday, Feb. 4.
