Live Oak —
Members of the African American Development Council have been working fervently in preparation for their Annual Black History Program this month.
The theme this year is “Positive Role Models Inspiring Positive Dreams.”
The goal of the AADC is to provide scholarships for high performing high school graduates to aid them in securing a college career. Over the past 15 years, the AADC has awarded young African American leaders in our community, who have met AADC scholarship criteria, $150,000 in scholarships. These scholarships have been made possible through contributions of caring community citizens, family members, friends and neighbors, Gloria Gresham and Casandra Yulee of the AADC said.
In preparation for this year’s program, the council has been researching the past history to highlight the accomplishments of young African Americans from our community. Although the Miss Black Suwannee County queens are being highlighted for their accomplishments this year, their awards were given by the Pageant Association, Yulee said. The pageant continues as the Miss Majestic Pageant, Yulee added. All former Miss Black Suwannee County queens are encouraged to contact Yulee at 386-362-5145.
According to Gresham and Yulee, the annual program will be held at Gethsemane Church of God, located at 1014 Duval St. in Live Oak on Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Dominique Reed and everyone, especially the youth of our community, is encouraged to attend.
Gresham and Yulee suggest that those in attendance take the opportunity to view the display highlighting the achievements of our adults and young people. The display can be viewed before and after the program.
