Live Oak —
The Florida Department of Education released a numerical ranking system for the state’s public and charter schools recently that are based on standardized test scores.
The FDOE said the new numerical ranking makes it easier for parents and educators to view information about the state’s education system.
“Floridians care about education and it is critical that our students have access to world-class schools that will give them a pathway to a successful career,” Governor Rick Scott said. “measuring each school’s performance helps gauge our progress toward that goal.”
Branford Elementary School ranked at number 778 out of 1,795 elementary schools in the state. Suwannee Intermediate School ranked 1,142.
For middle schools, Suwannee Middle School ranked 465 out of 583 middle schools.
In the high school category, Suwannee High School ranked at 394 out of 404 schools. Branford High School was in the combined high school category and ranked 47 out of 55.
Schools are ranked according to the number of school grade points they received for the 2010-11 school year.
According to the DOE, elementary and middle school points are derived from scores on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.
“Schools are awarded one point for each percent of students in the school who were enrolled for the full year who score on grade level or higher on the FCAT and make annual learning gains (800 possible points),” according to the DOE. “Florida’s high schools are graded using the FCAT and learning gains components described in the grading criteria for elementary and middle schools (800 points), plus several non-FCAT based components; including graduation rates, accelerated coursework participation and performance, and postsecondary readiness; that account for 50 percent of the high school grade (another 800 points). The total possible points for high schools is 1600.”
DOE released district rankings last week. Suwannee County schools ranked 55th out of 67 counties in the state.
