Live Oak —
Fitness just got a little easier with the help of Suwannee County School District Wellness Initiative in conjunction with Suwannee County Parks and Recreation.
New parcourses are open to the public at the First Federal Sportsplex in Live Oak and at Hatch Park in Branford.
A parcourse, or fitness trail, is specifically designed outdoor exercise equipment.
SCSD received a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield to “create healthy employees,” SCSD Wellness Coordinator Mary Wood said.
“We wanted to think outside the box. We encourage the employees to use the equipment, but it is not just for employees, it is for the community members too. It will get people outdoors. I think it is just going to be such a great thing,” Wood said.
The land for the equipment was donated by the parks and recreation department. SCPR will also be responsible for the maintenance of the equipment.
At the First Federal Sportsplex, the four courses are spread out along the two-thirds of a mile track around the perimeter of the park. The course stations at Hatch Park are all in one location. Each station has two sides with about eight to 12 different exercises on each.
The exercises, which are described on each side of the panel board, have different options for beginning exercises to more advanced ones, plus each station has workouts for three different days.
Both parks have the same system. The stations include, pulling and back, angle bar and hurdle, power step, agility step, squats and dips, stabilizing and balance, core and torso, and push-up and balance exercises. The workouts are specific for a total body workout. The system was designed by Energi for ages 13 and up.
According to the American Council on Exercise, adults should get at least 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week, or a minimum of 20 minutes of vigorous exercise three days a week.
