Bucs win over Hawthorne 13-12

Following two straight losses the Branford Buccaneer varsity football team got back on track with a 13-12 win over Hawthorne Friday night. The half time score was 7-6 Bucs. The Hornets scored in the first quarter on a 35 yard interception from quarterback Tim Clark to go up 6-0. The point after attempt failed. Clark connected on a 59 yard pass play to John Perry in the second quarter with Kyle Certain adding the PAT to give the Bucs a 7-6 advantage at half time.

Hawthorne scored on an 18 yard run in the third quarter and tried a two point after attempt which came up no good. The score was 7-12 Hawthorne.

In the fourth quarter Quarterback Clark once again connected with Perry on a 57 yard pass play but the kick failed to give the Bucs a 13-12 score and they went on to get the district win.

Quarterback Clark was 2 of 9 passing but both resulted in points for the Bucs. He had one picked off which resulted in points for Hawthorne. Clark was the Bucs leading rusher carrying the ball 9 times for 46 yards. Trent Thompson was 9 for 33 rushing; Wade Armstrong 7 for 23 and Kyle Certain 9 for 19.

The Bucs finished the night with 232 total yards in 38 plays. Hawthorne had 200 yards in 40 plays.

Hawthorne sustained ten penalties for 80 yards, while the Bucs were penalized 5 times for 35 yards.

Defensively David Bass had an interception. David Barrs recovered a fumble and Spencer White and Jay Fraddosio had quarterback sacks.

Wade Armstrong with 8 tackles and Clark with 7 lead the Bucs on defense. D. Bass had 4, J. Perry 6; Jay Fraddosio 5; T. Thompson 5; S. White 4; Matt Lambert 2; D. Garrett 3; L. Lynch 1; K. Certain 3 and D. Barrs 1.

The Bucs are currently second in District 2-1A play behind the Mayo Hornets who are sitting at the top with a 7-0 record following a 41-6 win last Friday over Jefferson.

Branford will host Trenton at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Buccaneer Stadium. Trenton is coming off a 41-6 defeat at the hands of Hillard.

On Nov. 7 the Bucs travel to Hillard before returning home on Nov. 14 to host Lighthouse Christian for senior night.

Athletic Director and assistant football coach told the News Monday, "if we win over Trenton and Hillard we could very well be in the playoffs."
