Bucs boys basketball defeat Jefferson County in district game

Branford — The Branford Buccaneers boys basketball (2-1, 1-1) defeated the Jefferson County Tigers (0-2, 0-1), 47-16 in a district game at the Buccaneer Multi-Sport Complex in Branford on Dec. 1.

“We played much better. The players are starting to get more comfortable on the court and with one another. It was a good win after dropping a game to Melody Christian,” head coach Perry Davis wrote in email.

Many of Jefferson County’s starting line-up were unable to play in this district game because of the football playoffs on Dec. 2, according to Davis. He said this gave many of his players on the bench an opportunity to get some court time.

Daivs said, “it was a great opportunity to get floor time for our bench.”

Senior Vincent Ruiz was two for three from the three point line. Junior Shequille

Williams was five of eight from the floor for baskets. Davis said Williams is starting to be a leader on the floor.

“Sophmore Jose Barron and senior Joey Stillwell had a great night on defense,” Davis said.

Branford had 16 points on the board during the first quarter, 15 for the second, 10 in the third and six points for the final quarter. Jefferson scored six in the first, two points in the second, six in the third and the final two points in the fourth. The final score was 47-16.

The Bucs took on Dixie County on Dec. 6, but the score was not available for press time.

Branford plays against Bell, at 8 p.m., on Thursday night in Bell. On Friday night the Bucs go up against Lafayette High School in Branford. The varisty players start at 7:30 p.m. and Junior varsity starts at 4 p.m.
