Branford girls basketball upset by Lafayette

Branford —

The Branford Bucs varsity girls basketball (4-4, 1-2) was defeated by the Lafayette Hornets (5-2, 1-1) on Friday night in Branford, 50-28.

“Given our past history with Mayo, we did a pretty good job,” head coach Wade Cashwell said. “With Mayo you can’t give them anything, or they will capitalize on it.”

The Bucs had a chance during the first half of the game, keeping the point margin under  12 points.

“We had success with breaking their press. Mayo is notorious for their press defense. It has always been our Achilles heel,” Cashwell said. “The game just got away from us at the end. I have great respect for Mayo and Coach Jimmy Blankeship. It doesn’t matter what kids he has, they have always been a good bunch.”

Stephanie Copeland lead the Bucs with nine points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two assists. Blair Bullock had nine points, four rebounds and two steals. Carolynn Woods scored six points, lead the team with 12 rebounds, had one assist and three blocked shots. Rebecca White had six rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot.

Overall I am proud of our team. Over five years we have come a long way. We could be contenders in the district in the future.”

The Bucs’ next feat was against Hamilton County on Tuesday night. The score was not available at press time. Their next game is at the Buccaneer Multi-Sport Complex at 7 p.m., on Dec. 15, against Cedar Key.
