Big Daddy's now open in Live Oak

Barbecue, steak on the menu

Big Daddy's BBQ & Steakhouse opened its doors for business Saturday. Owned by Don and Dena Wainwright, the restaurant is located at 314 W 72nd Trace in Live Oak.

Though the restaurant specializes in steak and ribs, it also offers other choices such as salads, sandwiches, appetizers and a children's menu.

Barney Wainwright Sr., Don's father, manages the restaurant.

Don named the restaurant Big Daddy's after his grandfather, Samuel William Wainwright. That sets the tone for this family-oriented restaurant. Besides the elder Wainwright, numerous members of the Wainwright clan work at the restaurant, including Robert Jr., Tommie Lou, Leslie, DeAnne and Ali.

"We're family-oriented people and we would like to provide that same type atmosphere to the public," Barney Sr. said.

The restaurant has a lodge-like atmosphere and features numerous family relics. The head of a bull from the elder Wainwright's farm is mounted above the front doors and watches over customers as they enter. Deer heads and turkey hunted by family members are mounted to the walls. An old yellow pine tree, which once stood on Barney Sr.'s land, was cut in half and now stands in the restaurant.

The exterior of the building is built from cypress from Don's farm. Several benches, as well as the front doors were made of oak from family property.

"The response has been overwhelming," Barney Sr. said of the influx of customers the restaurant has seen.

Don said he hopes his restaurant and the surrounding landscape will set the tone for growth in the area.

"We're trying to set the stage for other businesses to follow near the interstate," he said. "We hope and wish to be an asset to the community."

Big Daddy's is open Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
