Gadsden County to get solar farms

Live Oak — During a Monday morning press release, National Solar Power announced their landmark solar farm project will be awarded to Gadsden County.

For months, the Melbourne-based company had considered locating the project in Suwannee County. A few weeks ago, Suwannee County even made the short list of potential locations for the company to build. NSP has since researched these potential areas to locate and chosen Gadsden County.

According to Ron Sachs Communications, a public relations firm representing NSP, the site selection process has been exhaustive, but Gadsden County was the place selected. In addition to Gadsden and Suwannee counties, Hardee and Osceola counties were also being considered for NSP to locate.

NSP is a renewable energy company uniquely positioned within the marketplace to offer cost effective solar power solutions on the utility scale.

“We’re disappointed that we didn’t get it, but we’re going to keep moving forward,” President of the Suwannee County Economic Alliance Dennis Cason said.

Had NSP selected Suwannee County to locate, the community could have seen about 400 added jobs during the four to five year-construction phase, along with up to 120 permanent jobs in the area. The project will call for the construction of up to 20 solar farms in Gadsden County. Each farm could be as large as 200 acres.

“We do have several other projects that we’re working on at this time and hope to bring some of them into our community,” Cason added.
