Live Oak —
Record Store Days
By Gart Calamar & Phil Gallo
Hardcover, 238 pages ($19.95)
The local record store has fallen on hard times in today’s digital, Internet age. But thanks to collectors, audiophiles and nostalgic baby boomers, shops selling vinyl LPs— “long-playing” records—are making a comeback. This colorful, photo-rich celebration chronicles the rise, fall and modern resurgence of these once-vital retail cogs in the American pop machine, places without which, as noted by producer Sam Phillips, “there would be no Elvis, no Johnny Cash, no B.B. King.”

Saving Private Ryan
Blu-ray ($39.99)
Director Steven Spielberg’s hard-hitting WWII epic looks crisper, gloriously grittier and more wrenchingly realistic than ever in hi-def Blu-ray. But the real treasures here are ten bonus featurettes, including cast members reminiscing about the intense boot camp they endured to prepare for their roles, a look at the special-effects magic behind the movie’s D-Day recreation, and a Tom Hanks-narrated documentary on real-life World War II combat photographers.

Life
Blu-ray $69.99 / DVD $59.98
The breathtaking, 11-part BBC/Discovery Channel series, which aired earlier this spring, was spectacular in both subject matter and scope: Taking high-definition cameras onto every continent, into the air and under the sea, for an amazing sweep of animals and plants in habitats where simply surviving can be difficult. Now available on DVD, this collection includes several bonus documentaries about the extraordinary techniques---and technology---used by the globetrotting filmmakers to bring these 130 separate “life” stories to the screen. And that familiar-sounding narrator? Oprah Winfrey!
