Feed-A-Family Mobile Outreach program

Jasper — Catholic Charities puts compassion into action and is once again sponsoring the Feed-A-Family Mobile Outreach program on Wednesday, Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Jennings Public Library in Hamilton County. This year the program is called the 12-12-12 Project.

Last year over 10,000 pounds of healthy, nourishing food was given out to needy families during this event in Jennings and this year it is projected to be even bigger.

It is first come, first served and the Department of Children and Families will be taking SNAP applications onsite. For Hamilton County residents, no I.D. is required.

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of low-income needy persons, including elderly people, by providing them with emergency food and nutrition assistance. You are eligible to receive food from TEFAP if your household meets the income guidelines or participates in SNAP, TANF, SSI or Medicaid.

In October of 2008, the federal food stamp program changed its name to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which focuses more on nutrition.

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. SSI benefits are also payable to people 65 and older without disabilities who meet the financial limits.

Medicaid provides free or low-cost health insurance coverage for eligible recipients.

The Jennings Public Library is located at 1322 Plum Street in Jennings and you can reach them at 386-938-1143.
