Jasper — All results unofficial

Republican voters in Hamilton County chose former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich as the candidate they feel better suited to take on President Barack Obama in November.

Gingrich won the votes here by 56 percent, or 359 votes. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney took 22 percent, or 137 votes.

Rick Santorum came in third place with 11 percent, or 67 votes.

Ron Paul garnered 57 votes.

Of the 1,687 registered republican voters in Hamilton County, 637 of them voted for a participation rate of 38 percent.

The candidates will now shift their focus to Nevada for precinct caucuses to be held Saturday, Feb. 4.

As of press time, Mitt Romney was declared the winner statewide. Not all precincts in the state were accounted. However, unofficial results showed that Romney had 47 percent of the 1,323,370 votes cast compared to Gingrich’s 31 percent.

Votes by precinct will be published Thursday.
