On Sunday evening, Nov. 4, The Jasper Fire Department, the Florida Forest Service and Florida Highway Patrol responded to a fire that was across the roadway in Hamilton County on US 129, south of CR 150, according to reports.
Jasper Fire Chief Bill Trinder stated in his report that at 5:47 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4. a call came in that the woods were on fire. Units arrived at the location on US 129 and NW 13th Street at 6:02 p.m. and found the grass alongside the roadway was burning and had spread into a nearby wooded area.
Reports further state that Florida Forest Service (FFS) was contacted and responded, arriving at the scene with a tractor. The fire was extinguished just after 7 p.m. and the scene was turned over to the FFS for investigation as possible arson.
Reports also show that at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4, an FHP trooper arrived at the scene and reported that a 1/4 acre fire had been deliberately set and had burned on both sides of the roadway. FHP had advised there was the possibility of light smoke during the overnight hours and that they would be monitoring the area periodically throughout the night.
The investigation remains open at this time, according to the Jasper Fire Department.
