Outgoing HamCo commissioners say goodbye

Jasper — At the Nov. 6 meeting of the Hamilton County Board of County Commissioners, outgoing commissioners Lewis Vaughn, dist. 3 and Ronny Morgan, dist. 1, who are both retiring, wanted to say a few words about their service to the county. Robert Brown will be taking over the dist. 3 seat and Beth Burnam the dist. 1 seat on Nov. 20.

To the other commissioners Vaughn said, “It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve in this county and working with you guys for 27 years. I’m going to miss it, but most of all I’m going to miss you guys.”

Vaughn said he knew his statement was short and he wished he could put 27 years of thoughts into it, but the meeting was about to adjourn.

“I, too, have been privileged to be able to serve with you as a commissioner and also as a clerk,” said County Clerk Greg Godwin. “It will certainly be different. I’m sure that your predecessor sitting right out there (Robert Brown), he’s got some big shoes to fill. He’ll do well, but it will be a lot different up here not having the experience and the friendship that we had and established over all these years. I thank you for being kind to me as a commissioner and as a clerk. It’s been a tremendous experience for me in my life and I appreciate it.”

Morgan said, “It’s been a pleasure working with you all on the board. It was kind of sad yesterday, sitting here and thinking about going, and that today was going to be my last day.”

He, too, expressed his appreciation working with the other board members and serving the county.

“I think we made a lot of progress and made a lot of improvements in the county and I’m really proud of some of the things we’ve done,” said Morgan. “As sad as it was yesterday, I was left with a big smile this morning because I went in and voted. I was just joyful this morning knowing it was all coming to an end. God closes one door and he’ll open another one somewhere else. God bless you all and God bless this county.”

A send-off luncheon was held at 12 noon after the commission meeting at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Fellowship Hall for both Vaughn and Morgan.
