Rev. Dr. Charles Wayne Helms, 69, passed away Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. Mr. Helms was born June 16, 1943 in Stanly County, N.C.
While serving as a minister for 48 years, he pastored churches in several states including the Jasper Assembly of God, Jasper, Florida. 
The funeral services were on Wednesday, Aug. 22, at the Church of God, Main Street in Oakboro, N.C. Burial followed in the Oakboro Cemetery. 
Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Judy Gail Whitley Helms of the home; his son, Todd Helms and his wife, Darlene, of Stanfield, N.C.; his daughters, Tana Huneycutt and her husband, Paul, of Oakboro, N.C.; Terita Hatley and her husband, Reid, of Albemarle, N.C.; and Terry Cross and her husband, Charles, of Hohenwald, Tenn; his brothers, Roy F. Helms of Oakboro, N.C., and Hal Helms of Mint Hill, N.C.; his sisters, Ramelle Hartsell of Concord, N.C. and Ruby Huneycutt of Huntersville, N.C.; one aunt, Addie Long of Marshville, N.C.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Rev. Charles Helms pastored the Jasper Assembly of God Church, five years last July 2012.

Marion Elbert Hughes, age 78, of Jasper, Fla. passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2012 at the Lake City VA Medical Center in Lake City, Fla. following an extended illness.  Elbert was born in Echols County, Ga. on March 22, 1934 to the late Butler and Vashti Fouraker Hughes.  His career in the timber industry spanned more than thirty years. He retired from PCA (Packaging Corporation of America) formerly Owens-Illinois (forestry division).  He was dedicated to his work and his knowledge was invaluable.  Elbert loved being outdoors and loved to hunt and fish.  As a young man he served his country in the United States Army. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jasper, FL.  and was a dedicated husband, father, “papa” and friend. Elbert was loved by everyone that had the privilege of knowing him and will be greatly missed. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Joe Hughes and a brother-in-law, Bryan Ware.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Jennie Lou Hughes, Jasper, Fla.;  three sons, Chris Hughes (Kelinda), Scott Hughes (Denice) and Jodi Hughes (Donna), all of Jasper, Fla.; two brothers, James Hughes (Virginia), Clewiston, Fla. and Kenneth Hughes (Margaret), Easley, S.C.; one sister, Idoma Ware, Monks Corner, S.C.; six grandchildren, Dana Burke (Scott), LaCresha Hughes, William Hughes (Amy Atkinson), Maggie Hughes, Amanda Hughes and Matthew Hughes; two great granddaughters, Cassi and Alexandria.  Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Terry Hughes, Jasper.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church in Jasper with Pastor Sandra Hedrick officiating. Grandson, William Hughes gave the eulogy. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery, Jasper.
