The Hamilton County Trojans boys' basketball team hosted Lowndes and Georgia Christian to open up the 2005-06 basketball campaign.
The Trojans would fall to a very talented Lowndes County team from Georgia, but was able to get some great efforts by several Trojans in the contest.
Leading the Trojan scoring was Cam Cohen with 13. Cohen connected on three shots from behind the arc, and was able to grab four rebounds in the contest. Defensively, Cohen deflected three passes and also did an effective job of setting up other Trojans for scores with four assists.
Josh Jones was able to drop in eight points, while grabbing five rebounds. Defensively, he would deflect six passes and had a nice assist.
Jeremy Cole was unable to score, but did a great job battling underneath the boards leading the team in rebounding with six. He would also have a steal and an assist.
Desmond Williams would drop in eight points with most of his damage coming from the stripe going 5-6. He would also grab two rebounds, had a deflection and handed out two assists.
Desmond Kiser would keep the Trojans competitive on the boards pulling down five rebounds. He would tally five points as a result, and defensively had a deflection.
Other Trojans reaching the scoring column was Gareth Johnson with six points, Warren Cooks and Eric Jackson with five points, Glenn Sheppard and Ti-Wan Cooks with four, and Anthony Stevens scoring two points.
The Trojans would reach the win column the next night with a hard fought 57-53 win over Georgia Christian that required a shot by Jones to drop with three seconds left in the contest. That would be the winning margin on the scoreboard, but later, the Trojans would find out that two points was not recorded earlier in the game.
Josh Jones would explode in the contest for 29 points. He would make 13-17 from the field and grabbed 14 rebounds in an outstanding game. Defensively, he would get to four steals with a pass deflection and also handed out five assists.
Desmond Williams made it happen, especially when the game was on the line dropping in nine points, grabbed three rebounds, had a steal and was very active on defense deflecting four passes.
Ti-Wan Cooks would add eight points for the Trojans and grabbed three rebounds while deflecting a couple of passes.
Cohen would not score in the contest, but more than made up for it on the defensive side of the ball grabbing five rebounds, a steal and deflected five passes. He would also record two assists.
Glenn Sheppard poured in six points, had four rebounds, a steal and three pass deflections.
The rebounding efforts of Anthony Stevens continued with six boards in the contest, had a steal and four pass deflections while handing out an assist in another nice outing.
Desmond Kiser would find two points in the game with three rebounds. Defensively, a steal and four pass deflections kept the opponents in check for most of the contest. Kiser would also block a shot and provide an assist.
Belote Devlin would hit a three pointer for his only points of the contest, had a rebound, a steal and deflected a pass.
According to head coach Patrick Murphy, "We have a very young team with only three players who have played varsity before this year, that being Cohen and Williams. Belote also played a little bit on varsity last year. I am very proud of them so far this year. Their attitude has been superb and the effort has been solid."
The Trojans will send both their JV and varsity boys into action on Friday night at the home gym against Starke.
The ladies will send both their JV and varsity teams to Starke on Saturday night.
On Monday night, the Trojans sent both the boys and girls middle school teams to Mayo for a 4 p.m. showdown with the Hornets. Also on Monday, the boys traveled to FSU for an important district contest.
On Tuesday night, the middle school and varsity ladies traveled to Georgia Christian, while the boys JV and varsity teams were at home against West Nassau.
Basketball season has begun. Come on out and support a group of hard working athletes in both the boys and girls divisions. There are certainly enough games to be able catch on any night of the week you choose. The athletes would certainly appreciate your support as the Trojans take aim at a district title.
