Trojans upset Perry

The Hamilton County Trojans basketball team made a statement this past week knocking off the district leading and number seven team in the state rankings, the Taylor County Bulldogs 68-63.

Josh Jones would lead the team in scoring with 26. He was not going to be denied in the contest shooting 12-12 from the field. He also led the team in rebounding grabbing 10 boards. Three steals and five deflected passes really offset the Perry offense scheme.

Cam Cohen would not be far behind turning in an outstanding overall game scoring 22 points with four assists. Cohen was able to connect four times from downtown and handed out four assists. He also stole the ball three times and deflected a pass.

Desmond Williams was a floor general on this night. He scored eight points, but the unselfish nine assists issued by Williams paved the way for a lot of easy baskets. Williams grabbed four rebounds, had a steal and deflected three passes assisting a very aggressive Trojans defense on this night. He also blocked a shot.

Other scorers for the game were Gareth Johnson with four points and Tyrell Claridy, Blake Daniels, Glenn Sheppard and Anthony Stevens, each with two points.

The secret to the game was the Trojans ability to rebound with the Bulldogs on an even basis. There were several key players making that possible.

Sheppard was aggressive all game and finished with eight rebounds. He also stole the ball once and deflected three passes while finding an open Trojan for an assist.

Stevens pulled down five boards in the effort, and stole the ball twice with a deflection and had one of the teams' 17 assists.

Johnson was able to pull down three boards and deflected three passes.

The win puts the Trojans in the thick of the district title race with a 2-1 mark. The 4-6 record the team currently possesses is a result of playing some great competition that has included a game with Shores Academy who is the 2004-05 National Association for Christian Athletics National Champions. Lowndes is also a good game even though they are tough to beat on the court. Those games are starting to pay dividends for this group as the Trojans gear up for the final stretch run following the holiday break.
