Live Oak —
Dear Editor,
A question of curiosity. If you look closely at the sign on US 90 at the state correctional facility east of town, the following phrase appears: "WE NEVER WALK ALONE." I'm not sure what this means. Does it mean that , as a prisoner there, I never walk that I'm not accompanied by a correctional officer? Or that, as a correctional officer, I am always accompanying the inmates, no matter when or where they are going to insure that they don't escape? Or, as a correctional officer, I am always walking with another officer for our protection? I'm sure that there is some heartfelt content intended but the implication (please pardon the pun,) escapes me. Perhaps everyone else knows this and I just missed the meeting but,do you know the answer or can you find out?

According to Florida Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger, the motto “We Never Walk Alone” was established by former Secretary of Corrections Walter A. McNeil.
“It’s for employees, it means we all face our challenges together,” Plessinger stated.
McNeil was named secretary in January 2008 before being replaced by Governor Rick Scott earlier this year with Kenneth S. Tucker.
