Dear editor,
The other day my family and I like so many others these days found ourselves in court as some big finance company took our home away from us. Now it’s not much of house, just an eight-year-old double wide but we called it home. And the heartlessness of the finance company was no surprise to us as we have been belittled by them now for the last few years every since a heart attack stopped me from being able to work. As their high dollar attorney who did his job over the phone from the comfort of his big office somewhere, said all the right things as attorneys go to school to learn how to do. We tried to explain that my health was the reason we fell behind and that I had just started to collect S.S.I. and if the finance company had not raised our payments from $585 a month to over $800 we could have made the payments out of the minim wage my wife made.
I watched the judge’s face. I was not thinking about being homeless just before Christmas or how hard my life has been working as humble carpenter. I found myself thinking how hard it must be to have his job. I knew his hands were tied and that he was as a judge doing what he had to as the laws said he must. But as my poor wife started to cry I saw a small tear in the corner of his eye. Now I know one small tear does not mean a lot to most people but it did to me that day. It meant there may still be some hope for mankind. Maybe not for me nor for our once great country but that somehow if even someone who’s heart has been so harden by their job as I’m sure his must have been still cared even that much just maybe mankind still has a chance.
