To the Editor:

In a world where the headlines tell about teenagers shooting one another, robbing our neighbors and going to jail for selling drugs I find it comforting to be a part of an effort by teenagers to reach out to the community during this holiday season. The SHS Key Club spearheaded an effort to support "Project Feast" by challenging the SHS ICC (Interclub Council) to bring items for this worthwhile project. Each club signed up to bring in items to provide a complete Thanksgiving dinner for families in need. FFA & Band provided instant potatoes, The Environmental Club & Interact provided stuffing mix, SADD & FCA provided macaroni & cheese, BETA provided flour, NJROTC provided sugar, The Key Club provided 2-liter sodas and Suwannee Intermediate School provided over 1700 canned food items. After school on Friday afternoon 20 highschoolers gave up their time to transport, sort and pack 65 boxes for needy families. The youth also got adults involved by getting the Live Oak Kiwanis, Rotary, Suwannee River Women's Club and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 107 to provide funding for turkeys, pies, rolls, and butter. "Project Feast" was conceived by Dana Wainwright and Dena Lewis, who provided leadership and a location for preparation and distribution of the baskets. As we go into this wonderful holiday season I am honored to live in a community where the youth can take the lead and make a difference in so many lives. Thank you to each student who brought a canned good, bags of flour or sugar, soda, stuffing mix, potatoes, and to the Live Oak Service Clubs who believe in the youth of Suwannee County and are willing to support their ideas and efforts. I am proud to live in Suwannee County, Florida a place where the youth care and do something about it.
