Suwannee teens go high-tech with book reviews

The Live Oak Public Library recently completed a project they hope will be a hit among young adults.

Video Voices Library Teens: Being Seen, Being Heard was spearheaded by Technical Services Coordinator Sherry Millington.

A contest was held in February to choose one book reviewer/video star and one videographer. Twelve-year-old Josiah Cook was chosen as the video star and 16-year-old Kenna Peacock, the videographer. The purpose of the project was for Cook to select a book and review it on tape, captured by Peacock. Cook selected the book “Scat” by Carl Hiaasen. After editing, the video was placed on the library's Web site as well as YouTube.

Millington said the book choice, creative style and acting were all up to Cook and Peacock.

"They decided how it was going to be done," said Millington. "We gave them guidance but the creative part was them."

Instead of just reading a review of the book, Cook decided he and others would act out scenes from the book and interview others for their views.

Instead of boasting about being on camera for countless potential viewers, Cook simply looked to the future.

"I think I could probably do better next time," said Cook. "But, I think it turned out really good."

Peacock said she enjoyed the project.

"I thought it was really fun," she said. "It was a project that I think people will really like."

Millington said she decided to start the project because she wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary.

"I'm 100 percent thrilled with the outcome of it," she said. "The team members were great to work with. They were committed, resourceful and hopefully this pilot project will continue through the youth services department."
