Republican voters in Lafayette County chose former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich as the candidate they feel better suited to take on President Barack Obama in November.
Gingrich won the votes here by 51 percent, or 259 votes. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney took 25 percent, or 128 votes.
Rick Santorum came in third place with 17 percent, or 87 votes.
Ron Paul garnered 27 votes.
Of the 1,178 registered republican voters in Lafayette County, 508 of them voted for a participation rate of 43 percent.
The candidates will now shift their focus to Nevada for precinct caucuses to be held Saturday, Feb. 4.
As of press time, Mitt Romney was declared the winner statewide. Not all precincts in the state were accounted. However, unofficial results showed that Romney had 47 percent of the 1,323,370 votes cast compared to Gingrich’s 31 percent.
Votes by precinct will be published Thursday.

Jeep collides with semi's trailer; one injured
An emergency response official on scene at the SR 51 crash that occurred around 8:40 tonight, said a Jeep collided with a semi's trailer, tearing off a wheel from the trailer. The unidentified driver of the Jeep appeared to have minor injuries and was transported to Shands Live Oak, the official said.

A tractor trailer and another vehicle were involved in a crash on SR 51 at 104th Street, just south of Live Oak shortly before 9 p.m. Officials are on the scene. Please use caution when driving in the area.
