LHS students to volunteer at food ministry in Mayo

Mayo — On Saturday, Feb. 16, from 8-10 a.m. members of the Lafayette High School football team and members of the girls volleyball team will be serving their community by volunteering at the Seven Gables Food Ministry.

Eighteen months ago several churches in Lafayette County began a food ministry called Seven Gables in an old home of the same name, according to Matt Swain, pastor of Brewer Lake Baptist Church in Day, who assisted in starting the ministry.

Seven Gables is located on US 27 across from Farm Bureau Insurance. It has now grown to serve approximately 1,000 residents each month on the 3rd Saturday of the month, and is staffed by volunteers from the churches.

“This year I was honored to be the chaplain for Coach Pearson's Lafayette Hornets varsity football team,” said Swain. “Some of the young men - some who have been fed from ministry food and some who simply identified me with the ministry - began mentioning the possibility that they'd like to help.”

Swain was glad to accommodate, so on Saturday, Feb. 16, the local football team will be serving their community by helping to feed their families and friends.

As word began to spread around the school about this deed of kindness, the girls volleyball team said they wanted to get involved, as well, so there will be even more volunteers helping out.

“I feel that this partnership greatly highlights the best of our community,” Swain said.
