Nov. 19, 2012

Lucile Weaver Baldwin passed away on Nov. 19, 2012, at the Suwannee Valley Care Center operated by Haven Hospice in Lake City, Florida. ""Miss Lucy"" was born on April 22, 1919, in Camden, Alabama, the fifth of six children born to Edna Ruth Lazenby and Oliver Cornelius Weaver. When she was a child, the family relocated to Brewton, Alabama, where she grew up and completed high school. She attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, for a year before transferring to Alabama College (now Montevallo University) where she graduated in 1941.
Lucile took a job teaching high school in Athens, Alabama, where she met the love of her life, Lunie Oscar Baldwin, who was also teaching there. They married in 1943 a short month before he was sent to England to serve with the Army Air Forces in World War II. His tour of duty lasted three years, but he wrote to her every day.
When Oscar returned in 1946, the couple moved to Fla., where Oscar resumed his teaching career. They lived in Tallahassee for a short while before moving to Bunnell. All three of their children were born during their time there. In 1956 the family relocated to Melrose, where Lucile taught at the Faith Presbyterian Kindergarten for several years. The family finally settled in Branford in 1966. Lucile and Oscar both taught at Branford High School.
Oscar retired in 1974 and Lucile followed suit in 1976. Her beloved Oscar passed away in 1981. After his death, she enjoyed traveling, highlighted by a trip to the Holy Land, Egypt, and parts of Europe in 1990. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was an active, lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. In 2007, she established the L. O. Baldwin Family Scholarship Fund to provide assistance to college students interested in teaching vocational agriculture.
She was preceded in death by brother Harry Weaver of Brewton, Alabama, brother O. C. Weaver Jr. of Birmingham, Alabama, and Manhattan, Kansas, and sister Ruth Simonton of Marion Junction, Alabama. She is survived by sister Edna Carmichael of Salisbury, North Carolina, and brother Luther Weaver of Gainesville, Ga. Survivors also include daughter Sara Baldwin Howze (Wesley) of Melbourne, Fla., son Lloyd Weaver Baldwin of Branford, son Brent Oscar Baldwin (Inslee) of Alachua, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, at Daniels Funeral Home in Branford. A memorial service will be held at Branford United Methodist Church starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, followed by dinner in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Haven Hospice of North Central Florida or the L. O. Baldwin Family Scholarship Fund in care of the Florida FFA Foundation, 5000 Firetower Road, Haines City, Fla. 33844.
Daniels Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., of Live Oak and Branford, Fla. in charge of arrangements.
