Live Oak —
A Live Oak woman was arrested Wednesday on charges of neglecting an elderly, disabled adult, who later died, and falsifying hospital records, according to information from the office of Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Shannon Poppell, 43, 505 SE Nabor Ave., Live Oak, turned herself in to the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday following the investigation led by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.
According to a report, Poppell failed to care for and monitor the condition of a 94-year-old patient who fell and broke her hip and shoulder and later died. Investigators charge that Poppell also falsified hospital medical records to conceal her failure to provide proper nursing care to the victim.
Third Judicial Circuit State Attorney Robert L. “Skip” Jarvis Jr. will prosecute the case and, if convicted, Poppell faces up to five years and two months in prison and a $5,500 fine, the state’s attorney general said.
Poppell, a registered nurse, worked for Shands Live Oak Regional Medical Center prior to her termination.
Poppell faces one count of neglect of an elderly, disabled adult and one count of falsification of hospital records.
