Live Oak —
The Suwannee County Fair begins next week and while most think of the midway rides and the food that is available, there are several hundred kids in our area that look forward to one thing - the Youth Livestock Show and Sale. But which one should the kid attend?
You see, there will be two shows and sales this year.
We published a story in the March 14 edition that explained, due to a scheduling conflict, the dates of the Suwannee County Fair were moved up. The Fair Board decided to move up the dates of the Livestock Show and Sale as well. However, kids raise their animals in a way to anticipate a certain time period where they will be showing their animal(s) at the fair. As one who showed pigs in several of these shows and sales through high school, this editor can tell you that certain pigs would not have made weight a couple times if made to show them early.
The Livestock Board knows this as well and chose not to change the dates.
Good for them. Why couldn’t the Fair Board agree?
It’s a shame that something fun and rewarding for kids has turned into something like this. It’s for the kids folks. Remember that.
Let’s support these kids. Go to both shows and sales. It is not their fault there are two of them.
Hopefully there will be enough buyers.
