HOME INVASIONS: Police chief talks about robberies

Live Oak Police Chief Buddy Williams said Monday juveniles are likely to blame for local home invasion robberies and admits the department needs to change tactics in order to stop the crimes that have plagued the city since December.

A town hall like meeting will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at John Hale Community Park for the Hispanic community. LOPD is staging the event. Williams said his department wants to let the Hispanic community know where the investigation stands, give advice and answer questions. Translators will be available, said Williams.

"We're trying to do what we can," Williams said at the Democrat offices Monday. "(But) We're going to have to try a few different things. I'm afraid we're dealing with a group of juveniles because there is no fear."

Williams said the task force that was created to help catch the suspects remains intact and doing what it can. However, Williams said, it all comes down to manpower and communication.

"There is a lack of communication. Very few times have I been baffled in this business," said Williams.

Williams said he believes there is a group of young black males that work in rotation to target the Hispanic community, who often carry large sums of cash. He also said he believes the suspects live locally.

"I think they well plan it and execute it (the invasions)," said Williams.

In addition to the task force, Williams said increased patrols and manpower in targeted areas should help the situation.
