South county's message to Congress

I-75 billboard, funded mostly by Branford-area folks, is getting lots of looks

South county resident John Knapp has a message, and it's a bold one.

"Now it's personal ... America's coming for you, Congress! Vote Liberals out in 2010! We The People."

Those are the words that thousands of people see daily as they drive northbound on Interstate 75 in Lake City.

Knapp's idea to erect the billboard spread quickly, and didn't take long to gain support. He said about 80 people, mostly south county residents, donated money to rent the billboard, located off Sisters Welcome Road near the Evangel Church of God. The rent is paid in full through the November elections.

"Congress is absolutely abandoning all respect of the U.S. Constitution," said Knapp. "We don't have a Constitution anymore. It's a tyranny."

Knapp and fellow Tea Party member Eddy Roberts said they are tired of the same old government ways and frivolous spending.

"We're just both of the opinion that our Congress is out of control," said Roberts, a south county farmer.

He said he was behind Knapp every step of the way.

"I was John's cheerleader," said Roberts. "I thought it was a wonderful idea. If we don't do something soon, this country will be in a lot of trouble."

Knapp said other billboards with similar messages have popped up across the country. "Some modeled after our idea," he said.

Knapp said he and other Tea Party members will have "tea parties" once a month until October at the billboard, and then once a week in November.
