Live Oak —
A rabies alert has been issued by the Suwannee County Health Department following a positive laboratory result from a raccoon. According to Suwannee County Animal Services Director Janice Hunter, the alert went into effect on April 23.
The alert is for a specific area within Suwannee County, according to Suwannee County Health Department Administrator Pamela M. Blackmon.
“All citizens, especially the ones within the area around the intersection U.S. 90 West and West Tower Road are asked to maintain a heightened awareness that rabies is active in Suwannee County,” Blackmon wrote.
The alert encompasses an area that is just north of CR 132 to south of U.S. 90 and extends from the Suwannee River State Park to just east of 189th Road.
Residents in the area are advised to avoid contact with free roaming domestic or wild animals, refrain from leaving pet food outside and secure outside garbage in covered containers to avoid attracting wild animals. According to Blackmon, residents should contact their veterinarian to make sure their dogs, cats or ferrets have current rabies vaccination. Residents are also advised not to feed any stray or wild animals.
According to Blackmon, the alert will end in 60 days, unless another incident occurs within the alert area. Citizens are urged to contact a local veterinarian concerning any questions regarding the health of an animal.
