Head-on crash claims life of Jasper man

Jasper — A Sunday morning two vehicle crash on SR 6 in Hamilton County claimed the life of a Jasper man and left others with injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Reports show that at 11:11 a.m. on May 6, John Lee Copps, 55, Jasper, was traveling west on SR 6 near 71st Loop in a 1992 Nissan Sentra when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of the vehicle and crossed the center line, striking the front of a 1995 GMC SUV driven by Samuel John Winter, 58, Jasper, who was traveling east on SR 6.

Copps, the lone occupant in the Sentra, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was confirmed dead at the scene by paramedics. All the occupants of the SUV were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Injured were Winter with serious injuries and passengers Ramona Winter, 51, Jasper, with minor injuries, Mary E. Williamson, 23, Jasper, with minor injuries, Jonathan Willson, 7, Jasper, with minor injuries, and Joseph Cody Henderson, 22, Jasper, with critical injuries. Everyone in the SUV was wearing seatbelts except Williamson and Henderson, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash, reports state.

Damages to both vehicles were estimated at $10,000 each, FHP reported.
