Live Oak —
The hearing to decide the fate of a proposed landfill at the US 129 and I-10 corridor in Live Oak comes to a head Tuesday, Dec. 6.
Suwannee County Commissioners will meet in the cafeteria of Suwannee Elementary School at 6 p.m., located next to the Live Oak Library. At this hearing, commissioners will hear from those for and against a landfill. City of Live Oak Attorney Erny Sellers will be representing the city that night opposing a landfill being located in that area.
As of Tuesday, the county has yet to decide on which step to take in allowing citizen input.
We urge commissioners to allow public input as they have in the past. We also urge those that do speak to be mindful of time so as to allow others the opportunity to speak.
Come to this hearing. Make the 6 p.m., Dec. 6 meeting a priority. Make your opinion known to the commissioners by filling up the SES cafeteria. We hope to see standing room only.
We think allowing a landfill that may be a detriment to our growth, that could contaminate the city of Live Oak’s water supply, or be such a blight from smell and birds that our caring city is talked about, and not in a good way, is a bad thing.
Remember, the proposed landfill site is about a mile away from Live Oak’s newly installed water well fields and storage tank, which cost taxpayers around $3 million. We told you in our Nov. 4 Our View that the Department of Environmental Protection advised City Administrator Bob Farley that anywhere from 10-15 percent of leakage can be expected from the landfill.
The city knew that to stimulate growth and to be able to sustain growth, sufficient potable water was needed. We have that now. But garbage being “dumped” right next to Live Oak, may turn that nice water tower into nothing more than a buzzard perch.
