Live Oak —
A school crossing guard directing traffic at Suwannee Primary School was struck by a moving vehicle at the kindergarten pickup area Tuesday afternoon, according to reports.
Bernadette Burd, 46, was injured by an unidentified vehicle after the driver refused to obey the signal Burd had given regarding the flow of traffic.
According to the accident report supplied by Suwannee County Schools, Burd said that while trying to stop the vehicle from going in the wrong direction, the female driver ran her over.
“And I ended up on the hood of the car,” said Burd.
The side mirror of the vehicle struck Burd in the ribs that caused bruising to the area.
According to Director of Facilities Mark Carver, Burd had said she had given the signal for the unknown vehicle to turn left, but the unidentified female driver disobeyed and decided to go straight.
“Sometimes they can turn left, sometimes not, depending on the flow of traffic at the time,” said Carver. “The woman then indicated with her hands that she was going straight.”
According to Carver, Burd was pounding her fist on the hood of the car to tell the driver to stop from proceeding straight, but to no avail. To avoid being hit, Burd tried to jump out of the way of the oncoming car when the side mirror struck her in the abdominal area. The driver didn’t stop and left the scene of the accident.
According to Carver, Burd said that there was a child or children in the unknown woman’s vehicle at the time of the incident.
“The crossing guards are essential to the safety of the children and others,” said Superintendent of Schools Jerry Scarborough. “I would hope that the parents and the public would cooperate and give the utmost attention to them and what they do.”
