Rant & Rave - Dec. 21, 2012

Live Oak — The softball complex on Silas Drive has become a great place to take your family for an outing. There are places to walk, playground equipment, skating ramps, and sheltered tables for picnics. Check this out as a possible Saturday or Sunday afternoon treat.

The old Pic N Save Building should be used for something. What can't we attract businesses to house in these empty buildings like this one and the old, old Winn Dixie building? Go to High Springs and Alachua and you see quaint little shops without vacant buildings staring you in the face!

****

It would be nice if Live Oak could have a "Snow Day" like Lake City has. The children would love it and some adults too. Maybe, "Christmas on the Square" committee members might ponder this. I am certain it would bring sheer delight to so many!

This is just a thought about security in our local schools of Live Oak and Branford. Like Suwannee High has already done and like the design of the entrance at Suwannee Intermediate School, place a person facing the door immediately inside when folks come into the school. The security officers and/or school resource personnel could have an office there to increase the safety of our boys and girls.

Suwannee High School football games present some parking problems. I suggest a group which takes care of parking at SHS games visit Columbia High School and observe their plan for parking. I was so impressed with the many people there helping with their plan of action. This would only take you about 15 minutes to see how effective they are in parking people.

We need to ask these questions before the schools are reconfigured again: 1. How can we ensure it will be fair and equitable for all?

2. How do we compose the faculties at the schools so teacher talent and strength is fair? 3. When students are enrolled, where will the enrollment take place? Must have an impartial person/persons to handle the registration of all students. 4. What is the cost? What do we gain by doing this? 5. Is this the BEST plan for our elementary students? 6. How can we avoid another "West is the Best and East is the Least" type competition which happened for SO many years?

****

What will be the Suwannee County Schools Plan to increase the security of all schools in light of last Friday's Newton, CT school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary? There must be resource officer who has his/her office right at the front entrance so those coming into the building can be seen. We need to install sensors at the entrances which will detect weapons being brought into the buildings. Money cannot be a hindrance to having this done. We don't want a Suwannee County School addded to the list of school shooting tragedies. Our students deserve the very best security measures.

The new electronic marquee is a wonderful addition to the campus. It is an excellent public relations tool to keep the parents and community informed about the activities and other news that SHS may share. Thanks, Mr. Ted Roush for doing this.

What are the rules for the Suwannee County Road Department regarding the upkeep of dirt roads in the county including growth of bushes and trees which may protrude such a distance as to limit visibilty of oncoming traffic? It appears that some dirt roads are well-maintained while others lack the needed attention.

****

It's one thing for the County to go Wet. It's another thing to allow Sunday sales. How did the County sneak this change in without any publicity? Sunday sales should be decided by the voters, not the Commissioners and Councilmen.

People driving in Live Oak need to be more patient with each other. I've experienced loud, booming pickups gunning their engines as they go off into the ditch to avoid stopping while I wait for oncoming traffic to pass so I can turn left. It happens over and over. Also, people drive with their bright lights on and won't dim them!

Ronnie Poole's business and his residence are both so well-decorated for the Christmas Season. Ronnie, is it you or Renee who does the decorating? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and enjoy the lights and their beauty.

The Glee Club and the Honor Band at Suwannee High School presented their first annual concert at the Advent Christian Village. Drama Director, Emily Bass, shared plans for the spring production.

The Drama Troupe at Suwannee High School will begin auditions shortly for the spring production of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."

Don't miss the opportunity to see these wonderful, talented students perform.

When will the SC Sheriff's office do something about these kids and their HID lights? I'm tired of getting blinded by plug-and-play eBay lights with their green and blue colors. Florida statues require white in color, and to not cause glare- both of which these idiots are doing. Please do something about the tinted taillights as well! I almost ran into an idiot stopped because his taillights are blacked out by a $5 can from VatoZone

Never thought I would say it, but it is time for the government to lasso-in and collect all guns. Sorry deer hunters but this includes you also.

****

The government needs to establish reasonable prices and buy-back all guns, rifles and weapons. Afterwards, possession of any of these items should be a felon. That is the only way to control and reduce the senseless violence we have recently witnessed.

We live in the Rocky Sink area off 169th Road. Someone in the area has a dog that barks incessantly. Firstly, have some compassion for your dog and tend to its barking. It is obviously unhappy or needs something it isn't getting. If you don't care enough for the dog, find it a loving home. Secondly, have a little respect for your neighbors that have to listen to your poor dog bark all night long. Some people have sensitivities, disabilities, or small children that need their sleep. For Pete's sake, please stop your dog from barking outside all night!
