A Mayo man and Cross City man sustained minor injuries in an early morning head on collision on U.S. 27 near Lafayette Street on Tuesday, Jan. 29, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Reports show that at 6:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, a 1994 Ford pickup truck driven by Nicholas Chaz Barrett, 23, Cross City, was traveling west on U.S. 27. A 2004 Toyota Camry driven by Avon Kenneth Koon, 21, was traveling east on U.S. 27.
Reports further state Barrett failed to negotiate the curve west of the intersection of Lafayette Street and traveled into the east bound travel lane of U.S. 27 into the path of Koon’s vehicle. Koon swerved onto the paved shoulder trying to avoid a collision, but the left front of Barrett’s pickup collided with the left front of Koon’s vehicle. After impact the pickup rotated in a counter clockwise direction and came to final rest in the center of the roadway facing south. Koon’s vehicle rotated counter clockwise and came to final rest on the paved shoulder of the roadway facing in a northeasterly direction.
FHP reported that U.S. 27 was closed for approximately one hour after the crash. Both drivers were transported to Shands at Live Oak by Lafayette County Rescue for treatment of minor injuries.
Barrett was charged with driving left of center and no seatbelt and Koon was charged with not wearing his seatbelt, reports state.
