Four people were lifeflighted to Shands UF and one man walked away shaken up in a single vehicle accident Thursday afternoon on I-10 near Live Oak.
An onlooker, who would not give his name, said he watched as driver David Torres, of Costa Rica, traveled off the roadway onto the shoulder and tried to steer back onto the highway.
"The vehicle flipped about 10 times," an onlooker said. The car came to rest on its passenger side and caught fire in the east roadway ditch.
"Half a dozen semi drivers stopped and began putting out the fire with their extinguishers," the onlooker said.
In addition to the driver, the vehicle was carrying two women, a man and a young boy.
Rescue helicopters landed one after the other to transport the four injured passengers to area hospitals. Torres stood on the roadside, watching and praying as each of the four were loaded into the awaiting helicopters.
Suwannee County Fire/Rescue, Florida Department of Agricultural officers and the Florida Highway Patrol all responded to the scene.
