Big doings downtown

Christmas displays sure to dazzle

Downtown Live Oak will come to life Saturday evening as the community gathers for Live Oak Lights.

The newly created Christmas celebration is geared at bringing area residents to the downtown business corridor for an exciting holiday experience filled with shopping and family fun. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. at Millennium and Veteran's Parks, and throughout the downtown business corridor. It will run until 8 p.m.

"The idea behind this is to give our area residents a chance to come out and support our local downtown businesses," said Randy Torrance, chairman of the Live Oak Partnership.

As a special treat, Mayor Sonny Nobles will lead the crowd in the lighting of two Christmas trees downtown at 6:15 p.m. Soon thereafter at 6:30 p.m., Santa Claus will make his grand appearance on Pine Avenue.

There will be Christmas carriage rides throughout downtown, caroling, door prizes, crafts and plenty of downtown shopping opportunities, Torrance said.

A number of businesses, including the Suwannee Democrat, will open their doors to evening patrons, and workers from the Country Basket and others will provide crafts for all to enjoy.

(Editor's note: The Democrat has something special in mind for those who stop by. See Friday's paper for details.)

The event will serve to debut the new white-light pole decorations purchased by the city, and businesses are encouraged to decorate their storefronts in white lights, thus creating a true "white-light Christmas" throughout downtown Live Oak. The best-decorated business will receive a gift basket of prizes from the local business community. Business owners are interested in participating are asked to contact their designated block captains to enter their business in the parks listing.

The Live Oak Lights celebration is a new Christmas event sponsored by the Downtown Merchants of Live Oak and the Live Oak Partnership Revitalization Board. The aim of both groups is the create an image of downtown Live Oak as a unique destination for shopping, dining and entertainment. Event coordinators are hoping "Live Oak Lights" becomes an annual event to launch the holiday season.

Everyone is invited to attend.
