As Christmas approaches and Chanukah is upon us the spirit has taken a wrong turn. Tiger Woods, a human being by all accounts, is being portrayed in images that are not of the holiday spirit. Such evidently is the life of a superstar who has suffered an indiscretion or two. Tiger has become a poster boy for a sports society that so much loves to destroy its heroes and then revere them at a later date.
Joe DiMaggio was hated, he replaced Babe Ruth. He became loved when Mickey Mantle appeared. Mantle was hated until Roger Maris showed up. Specifically in golf, Jack Nicklaus was hated as the replacement for Arnold Palmer. Jack is revered today and Tiger almost had a free ride until this. Tiger is going to catch more flack than any athlete in history because he has made more money than any athlete in history. That is the bottom line. Call it greed, jealousy, envy, comeuppance, whatever, this guy is going to take a beating that would make Rocky Balboa look good. By the way didn't Sly do an X movie?
The head honcho at Nike has continued to support Woods. He as given us such icons as Scottie Pippin, Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders, Bo Jackson and of course Michael Jordan. Did I mention the same company gave us Dennis Rodman, Michael Vick and Kobe Bryant, all role models for a Fellini movie. Tiger has enough money to last until Star Trek the 6th generation. Are his shoulders broad enough to carry his new baggage?
As the Christmas season progresses Tiger will be exploited in the name of capitalism. Our computers will be filled with less than family value pictures of Mr. Woods and his alleged exploits. It makes you wonder who the people are who have the time and resources to create these photos. Is that what they had in mind when they bought the Photoshop program. Maybe they didn't buy it at all. Maybe someone gave it to them for Xmas.
