Wellborn woman run over, killed in Alachua

Police officer was responding to disturbance call

Angela R. Tanner, 33, of Wellborn was killed when an officer of the Alachua Police Department accidentally ran her over Sunday.

According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, officer Chad Scott was called to a disturbance complaint at 11605 Sage Blvd. just off CR 2054, where Tanner was a visitor.

The report states that Scott was driving down the grassy dirt driveway leading to the residence when he saw Tanner lying in the middle of the driveway. Scott swerved to the left, but was unable to avoid hitting her.

Tanner died at the scene.

The report states that Scott was driving about 15 miles per hour when the car hit Tanner.

Why Tanner was lying in the driveway is not known, but reports state that she was the one Scott was to contact at the residence.

Tanner was employed at Nell's Restaurant in Branford for about two years and left about six months ago, according to co-worker Amanda Stapleton.

"It was shocking. I just couldn't believe it," said Stapleton. "We just spoke to her a few days ago."

"I was so upset to say the very least," said friend and co-worker Deanna Kravec. "I was at work when I got the call and it just devastated me."

Kravec said Tanner enjoyed the river and swimming.

"She loved to be around water," Kravec said. Kravec said she and Tanner enjoyed playing badminton together.

Tanner is survived by two daughters, Amber, 14, and Sierra, 11.

"She really was a good person," Kravec said. "She lost her father to cancer last year, and it has just been really tough for her."

Scott was placed on administrative leave with pay after the incident, per department protocol, say authorities.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
