Variable oak leaf caterpillars that have descended upon the southeastern United States have struck Suwannee County as well, having defoliated a square mile tract of oak trees here. The leafless oaks are easily spotted among the greenery of the pines.
According to County Forester Brian Cobble, these caterpillars don’t always kill the trees they feed on. The trees will recover unless other environmental hazards occur, such as severe drought following the infestation.
To spot possible infestation, look for a thinning crown, dry branches and partial dieback. The caterpillars can vary in color (hence the name "variable") but are generally brownish in color with some red. If you have damaged trees, call your county forester at 386-364-5314.
