Live Oak —
As far as editorial objectives go, number one on our list is our most important. That is installing a county administrator. We believe that with the right administrator in place, most of the other objectives on the list can be taken care of.
We want the most qualified for the job. That may or may not have been Joe Gerrity, but he’s leaving us now and, well, we can’t blame him.
Now, let’s focus on getting the right person for the job. To begin, let’s take another look at the qualifications for the position and focus on the part that states a degree is preferred but not required as it is stated in the present draft. County Attorney Hal Airth was instructed Tuesday night to amend a previous draft that stated at least a bachelor’s degree was required.
The board will vote on the present draft in February.
We think the commissioners who wanted the language changed should reconsider. The top job in county government should hold at least a bachelor’s degree.
We’re not saying that managers can’t manage without a degree. However, having the wording that it’s not required in your qualifications makes it sound like some commissioners have someone in mind without that qualification.
We’re told that the two department heads the administrator will oversee do not require that person to possess a degree. That’s good, because if their boss doesn’t have to hold a degree, doesn’t make too much sense to us why the employees should.
Let’s not alter our standards fellas.
