Opinion: The Democrat Says

Live Oak — Let’s eliminate the irritants

Shop local. I am sure you have heard or read that more than once this year alone. There are web sites and Facebook pages urging you to shop local, or in other words, at businesses that are locally owned - not the big box stores. The problem is, most folks who have the means to spend money work during the day. A lot have weekends off.

Now you say, well Myra and Jeff, they can go after work or on the weekend to the local shop to get their wares.

Not so easy.

Most of these “shop local” businesses call it a night around 5 p.m. and many don’t open on weekends.

Folks, you pay for convenience and you should pay for customer service.

That brings us to the other matter of customer service.

We agree with helping out your neighbor and your hometown people. But when you have hours of operation that aren’t suitable to your customer base and you have customer service that is worse, don’t blame folks from going elsewhere.

We understand local prices for some items may be a bit higher to stay in business. But, if you eliminate those irritants we have just mentioned, we are sure that the price can be overlooked - to an extent.

Kudos to Live Oak City Council

For refusing to take on the condemned buildings in downtown Live Oak.
You should not take on someone else’s responsibility. The owners of that building would have received a very sweet deal if you took those buildings off their hands. But Valentine’s Day is over and sweet deals are out of the question when you start involving city taxpayers.

After the owners have the building taken down with their own financial fortitude, then they can come back to the city and see if they want the deed to the open land. But then again, now that we think about it, once the sinkhole problem is remedied, why take prime real estate off the tax roll?
