Jasper —
All three Hamilton County Public Libraries are participating in Florida Library Snapshot Day, joining libraries across Florida in taking pictures and collecting statistics and patrons’ comments showing how Floridians are utilizing their libraries.
The Florida Library Association (FLA), in partnership with the Division of Library and Information Services is collecting the results and will be posting them on the FLA website where everyone can see these powerful stories.
One library’s pictures and statistics may be small, but when the results from the entire state are combined they have quite an impact.
The Jennings Public Library held their Library Snapshot Day on Wed., Jan. 30. Librarian Sandi Allen said the day started out with a visit from the folks at ACCESS, a program of the Florida Department of Children and Families that allows qualified applicants access to food stamps, medical assistance and temporary cash.
ACCESS stands for Automated Community Connection to Economic Self Sufficiency. The program helps to promote strong and economically self-sufficient communities by providing food, cash and medical assistance to individuals and families on the road to economic recovery.
The fun started with Preschool Storytime at 2 p.m. and then Fun Days at 3 p.m. One especially fun activity for the Headstart kids was making bird feeders out of pine cones, peanut butter and birdseed.
Additionally, author Karen Ostrom was on hand from 1-3 p.m. autographing copies of her latest book, “What To Do About Granny”, a tale about a young man’s struggle with the ghost of his dead grandmother.
Ostrom said a lot of folks bought their books in advance so they’d be sure to get a copy when they came in for the book signing. Her son Steven was at the library and said his mother had been writing short stories for a long time.
“I hope she doesn’t write anything about me,” he said, laughing. “I’ll be nervous.”

More photos from the Jasper and White Springs libraries will be coming soon.
