Donations benefit autism in Lafayette

Mayo — The 2nd Annual Suwannee River Paddle for Autism coming up April 27 is well into the planning stages with donations pouring in from local townsfolk and businesses who are helping to sponsor the event.

Peggy Grill, in her second year of heading up the event, has been busy in the community raising awareness of autism, a complex developmental disability that affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills. There is no cure as yet, but research is finding better ways to understand it and help people cope with the symptoms.

Grill recently received a sponsor donation check in the amount of $200 from Tom Tuckey, community relations manager at Suwannee Valley Electric Cooperative. Tuckey also donated six clocks, eight sets of four SVEC anniversary beer glasses,and five carry bags for door prizes.

On Monday, Feb. 4, Drummond Community Bank followed suit with a sponsorship check for $200, which was contributed by the entire staff at the bank.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 27, and come join in the fun for a leisurely paddle along the Suwannee River. The event will begin at 9 a.m. at the Highway 51 bridge in Mayo where you can sign up until 12 p.m. Your final destination will be Suwannee River Rendezvous Resort and Campground where there will be live entertainment from Mean Mary and the Saltwater Cowboys from 1-8 p.m. Your $10 donation includes entertainment and raffle for prizes. Grand prize is a Perception Prodigy 10.0 Kayak.

Canoe/kayak rentals will also be available at the check in point at the Highway 51 bridge.
