FFA converges on Mayo

Mayo — The Florida FFA District III Contest was held Thursday, Jan. 24, at Airline Baptist Church in Mayo. Over 200 FFA members, advisors, judges, alumni, and supporters attended. The contest included the three sub-district winners within District III. The district winners will advance to the state final held at the 85th Florida FFA State Convention in Orlando. The winners are one of 12 that advanced from the statewide district contests held Jan. 24 throughout Florida.

The contest also was the site for the agricultural mechanics preliminary exam. The top 10 teams from that exam will advance to the finals in May.

The Lafayette Senior Parliamentary Procedure team has won back to back district championships since 1999-2000. Lafayette will return to the Florida FFA State Finals since finishing second last year. Team members include: Cory Murray, Emily Fredriksson, Garrett Hart, Karley Barrington, BreeAnn Smith and Michaela Shaw.

The Lafayette Middle School Parliamentary Procedure team won the district championship for the fourth time in six years. Lafayette Middle will return to the Florida FFA State finals after finishing second last year. Team members include: Cole Hingson, Shane Harris, Brayden Lamb, Harli Lawson, Brianna Celedon and Katie Fletcher.

The Lafayette Opening and Closing Ceremonies team won their second district championship in three years. They return to the Florida FFA State Finals after finishing fourth in 2011. Team members include: Kaylin Morgan, Tara Byrd, Josh Singletary, Krista Lyons, Carrigan Buchanan, Mackenzie Long, Ainsley Peterson, Ali Singletary and Kendall Calhoun.

Clay Jackson won the District Creed Contest. He will return to state for the second time in his FFA career. Clay was a member of the 2011, fourth place Opening and Closing Ceremonies team in the state.

The Lafayette FFA Chapter encourages all FFA supporters to attend the 85th Florida FFA Convention in June to support our FFA members while they compete for a state championship. More information regarding the convention can be found at www.flaffa.org.

The Lafayette FFA Chapter appreciates Airline Baptist Church for allowing the Florida FFA District III Contest to be held on their property. The chapter also appreciates the many supporters who assisted in making the contest run smoothly, as well as making it a positive experience for all involved.
