Lafayette FFA wins three district championships

Mayo — Bronson – The 2012 Florida FFA District III Contest was held Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Bronson First Baptist Church in Bronson. The contest consisted of the sub-district winners from the sub-district contest held on Dec. 6. District III consists of the FFA chapters of Madison, Hamilton, Suwannee, Lafayette, Columbia, Gilchrist, Dixie and Levy counties.

The Lafayette FFA Senior Chapter won the Senior Parliamentary Procedure Contest. This is the first time that the Senior FFA Chapter won this contest since 2000.

The senior chapter contest includes the team completing a written exam, a 10 minute presentation involving correct usage of at least 10 out of 24 parliamentary motions, oral questions, and the completion of written minutes. The team has practiced over 50 hours over the past three months in preparation for their sub-district and district championships. The team consisted of Logan Hewett (chairman), Emily Fredriksson, Garrett Hart, Cecelia Koon, Kali Sharpe, Karley Barrington and Logan Luse (alternate).

Cecelia Koon, also for the second year in a row, won the District Extemporaneous Public Speaking Contest, marking her sixth FFA District Championship in her career.

The Lafayette Junior FFA Chapter won the Middle School Parliamentary Procedure Contest. This marks the third time in the past five years that the Junior Chapter has won the parliamentary procedure middle school district contest.

The middle school chapter contest includes the team completing a written exam, a 10 minute presentation involving correct usage of at least 10 out of 10 parliamentary motions, oral questions and written minutes. The junior team has also practiced over 50 hours over the past three months in preparation for their sub-district and district championships. The Junior Parliamentary Procedure team consisted of Coley Hingson (chairman), Kelbey Pearson, Ashlyn Perry, Bree Ann Smith, Michaela Shaw and Grace Perry.

The district winners will now advance to compete in the state semi-finals at the 84th Florida FFA State Convention in June. There are only 12 remaining teams/individuals left in contention for a state championship.
