Catholic Charities helps needy families in Mayo

Mayo — Catholic Charities (Lake City) stopped in at Thriftway in the town of Mayo on Tuesday, March 12, in an effort to help needy families.

“Catholic Charities worked with Lafayette County homeless liaison, Teresa Hamm to provide $100 food vouchers for families in need,” said Catholic Charities CEO Suzanne Edwards. “This is the third year we have worked with Thriftway to feed Lafayette County families.”

In three and a half hours, beginning at 8 a.m., the Catholic Charities Team was able to serve 377 people, which equates to 85 families who received a much needed boost of the “most basic need...food.”

Edwards explained that families were able to shop specific to their own family needs.

“We are pleased to know that the next couple of days people will have balanced meals of their choice,” Edwards said. “We always leave Mayo feeling full of goodness, as we received far more than we could ever give out. The appreciative smiles, hugs and small children just grinning ear to ear really makes long days worth every minute of it.”

Edwards said their mission is to help those in need, and as demonstrated in Mayo, they were able to fulfill that mission.

“Many thanks to Michelle, Chuck and all the great employees of Thriftway, and Teresa and Maria from Lafayette school system for making this a smooth and seamless event,” said Edwards.
