Flood levels to increase over weekend

Live Oak — As floodwater takes its course through local rivers, some regions will continue to rise.

The Suwannee River Water Management District projects the Suwannee River near Ellaville and Suwannee at White Springs should be near flood stage through the weekend. According to the current river levels provided by SRWMD, Ellaville was at 54.42 feet on Thursday, just over the flood stage of 54 feet.

“Ellavile appears to be cresting near six feet above flood stage," said Megan Wetherington, senior professional hydrologist for the Suwannee River Water Management District. “Given the amount of water backed up behind the Alapaha, the river should not fall much through the weekend, so what you see is what you get at White Springs, Suwannee Springs, Nobles Ferry and Ellaville."

Boaters and canoe/kayaks should avoid the area below Nobles Ferry. Dowling Park and Branford should continue to rise throughout the weekend.

She said Dowling Park, Branford, Three Rivers Estates expect a slow rise the next several days.

Wetherington said as the weekend goes along, the current is expected to significantly increase.

As of Thursday, the river level in Branford was at 25.71 feet, just four feet shy of the flooding stage. Dowling Park was at 45.22 feet, flood stage of 50 feet and White Springs was at 61.69 feet. Flood stage there is 77 feet.
