Medicare Part D coverage.....

This week's installment on the continuing story of the Medicare Part D coverage deals with the question for those who already have prescription insurance.

Vicky Noling, pharmacist with Mayo North Florida Pharmacy says those with retirement, Tricare (military), government employees should get a letter from their present insurance carrier stating if their coverage is as good or better than Medicare Part D. If so, they can choose to stay with their present carrier.

If you are one of this group and you have not been contacted by your present carrier you should contact them to ask about the standing of your coverage.

Another question being asked is about the Medicare Approved Discount Cards. These cards can be used until May 15, 2006 or until you enroll in a plan, whichever is first.

If you are presently on Medicaid you will automatically be assigned to a plan. Medicaid recipients will pay no deductible, no monthly premium, will have a $1 to $5 co-pay per prescription and can change plans every 30 days.

Those who qualify for low-income coverage can get extra help. If you did not get a letter from Medicare or Social Security and you feel you do qualify for extra help you can call 1-800-MEDICARE or log onto www.ssa.gov.

If you did get an application, fill it out as soon as possible and return it to see if you qualify for additional help.

Remember, do not sign up for a plan until you are approved for the extra help.

As I stated last week, most of your questions may be answered by your local pharmacist. If not, they could be willing to assist you with whatever concerns you have.
