LHS Middle school FFA team prepares for competition-videos and pics included

Mayo — Lafayette County Clerk of Courts Ricky Lyons took a step back in time on Wednesday, Dec. 5 and served as advisor to the Lafayette Middle School FFA Parliamentary Procedure team as they held a practice session in front of an audience. Lyons was filling in for his son Chad, who was at a competition with the senior team.

On Thursday, Dec. 13, the middle school team will travel to Cross City for the sub-district competition.Team members are Katie Fletcher, Brianna Seledon, Shane Harris, Adam Land, Harli Lawson and chairman Coley Hingson.

After the group performed, many adults in the audience stated they were former FFA members and that the questions seemed to be more difficult than when they were on the parl pro team.

Lyons explained there is very little difference now between the middle and high school parl pro questions.

“The bar has been raised a good bit,” he said. “Under the surface it’s really a lot more technical because each one of them, on their card, they have a motion they’re responsible for, but they have to do an extra motion, which is some other kind of business they all have to present. Plus, they all have to discuss at least twice and they all get points for that.”

When asked why they joined FFA, the middle schoolers had a variety of answers.

Eighth grader Adam Land said, “I joined FFA because I was doing hogs and I decided not to do them. I wanted to do something with FFA.”

Shane Harris, another eighth grader said, “I joined FFA because it’s fun.”

“I joined FFA because I like agriculture and animals,” said eighth grader Katie Fletcher.

Brianna Seledon is in seventh grade and said, “I joined FFA because it gives me a chance to work with a team and be able to meet new people and allow me to improve my speaking abilities.”

Eighth grader Harli Lawson, who also served as secretary for the team during this practice session, said, “I joined FFA because I enjoy participating as a team in Career Development Events (CDE).”

Coley Hingson said, “I joined because my cousin talked me into it.”

This is Hingson’s second year with FFA and he is serving as the chairman of the middle school parl pro team. All joking aside, Hingson seems truly at home in his position as chairman.
